Wrenboy
An ancient Druidic tradition in Ireland on St. Stephen’s Day, 26th December, the Wrenboys are said to take to the streets in a three-piece oat straw suit to hunt the wren, or ‘wran’. Parading and knocking on doors, they ask for a penny ‘to pay for the funeral of the wren’. To refuse would result in the bird being buried outside your house, bringing bad fortune for the year ahead.
“The wran, the wran, the king of all birds,
St Stephens’s Day was caught in the furze.
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
Give us a penny to bury the wran.”
